Mean to me

It's probably [most likely] symptomatic of recent events, but I've been thinking about Crowded House.

They were always there [what, with me growing up in Australia], but I remember the moment when I finally did pay attention to them. I mucked around with people in high school that liked the same sorta music I liked. A bunch of us were mucking around with a few instruments and a stack of CDs. While listening to Don't Dream It's Over, one of them singled out the line:
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
saying how he loved it.

If you know the song [most of you should], you'll know there's this rhythm to the lyrics, but that line just goes, no, I'm going to shove in a few more words into the same time. It's different to the rest, so it's easy to single out.

Crowded House were always capable of writing songs that were overly sentimental, but the songs are just too good to dismiss for sentimentality. Better Be Home Soon is a good example.

There's a new busker in the Devonshire Street tunnel. Today, he massacred Better Be Home Soon. I've seen him twice before, and it's his voice that kills it. It's too big, and he's accompanied only by a cheap guitar that's not loud enough. His voice is also too raspy. Compare Neil Finn. I had the song in my head on the way home, but I had to remove the guy's influence. I put the record on when I got home. He hit on a girl as she walked past. I noticed because I noticed the girl first. 'Hey, pretty lady,' in a raspy voice. Not very appealing, especially from a bogan busker.

Don't Dream It's Over is another sentimental one. Whenever I hear that line, I'm reminded of the good times at high school.

But then, there's this:
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief
from the same song.

If you know the song, you'll know this one doesn't fit the rhythm, either. But this line always throws me off. I guess you need to know the song. But I'm sure you've all heard it hundreds of times over.
